Its as if he says it every time he opens his big brown shiny eyes,"Your gonna love me, and I am never giving up.". Muddles waits at the gate, sits patiently at his feet and sleeps outside his bedroom door. But Chen our exchange student looks and smiles, shakes his head "no", at first I was despondent, how could it be? But everyday Chen would walk by smile his huge smile at Muddles and Muddles tail would bang enthusiastically. Chen would pet him lightly on the head and walk away.
Its a week since that first encounter and Muddles is still holding his ground and I think has even made some real headway. last night I found Muddles dozing in Chen's room on his bed while Chen did his homework. The night before he was sitting in the same chair while Chen played a video game resting his head on Chens shoulder.
Chen continues to politely pet his head in front of us, Muddles still holds out and waits for "his boy" to come home after school. I see his broad smile as he comes in and muddles runs up to greet him, "his boy."
Chen is undoubtedly unsure what to do with this half dachshund half basset hound dog that shows his devotion. But I know, when I look at Muddles looking at Chen, there in no question in my mind that Muddles is saying , "your going to love me, because I love you and that's just how love is between boys and their dogs.
I think I can confidently say Muddles is winning.
