It hurts for a reason

We knew what we were getting into when we bought the first of our older dogs home. The eventuality of heartbreak. We knew when we bought our new home to make room for more older dogs we were opening ourselves for more heart break. With each dog that came into our hearts and homes we knew our time would be short.
Cinnamon would be different, she was after all only three when we bought her into our home two short years ago. She was young and vibrant, sweet and energetic. But as with dogs when they start to get ill it goes very quickly. Last spring Cinnamon was diagnosed with dog Lupus, auto immune disease, she was achy and did not like to be petted to hard, her nose started to form a scab and would bleed when we would rarely forget to put medicine on it. Last weekend she started to cry. Just sitting or standing would go into fits of yelping. I brushed it off that she had been wrestling with one of the big dogs, I had seen it in the past when she would get "rolled". But as days passed she showed no improvement. Dave and I took her off to the vet. Afterwards the x-rays gave us the news we dreaded but I think we knew. Her spine, she has a degenerative disk disease. The spine is trying to fuse together.
We had lost our girl Jenny to the same disease three years ago. If we have caught it soon enough well we will be blessed with more time. If we haven't, then I will spend months wondering what I could have done to save her.
In the meantime I am off to make banana, peanut butter spiral refrigerator cookies for her and the others. Life is way to short not to have cookies made for you or to take the time to make cookies for someone you love.

Politics and Fido

...a Latin name meaning "I am faithful." As such it is a terrific name for the average protective and loyal family dog. However, it gets its popularity from a celebrity tie-in. Apparently, Abraham Lincoln, a largely self-educated but very erudite man, named his dog Fido. Americans followed suit in droves, putting the dog name Fido firmly in the top 20 names. Lincoln’s choice of Fido for his dog’s name was perfectly logical. Fido is the Latin for faithful, which when dealing with any pet dog is entirely appropriate
